A yellow diamond weighing 552 carats was unearthed in Canada. It is the largest diamond ever unearthed in North America. Its current value is still unknown.
Canada's Dominion Diamond Mines announced yesterday that they dug up the egg-sized yellow diamond in the Diavik diamond mine, 217 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, in October.
According to reports, large gemstones are commonly found in mining areas in southern Africa, and yesterday this yellow diamond was ranked as the 7th largest diamond of this century.
Daoming Diamond Mining Company stated that the wear marks on the surface of the diamond prove that the unearthing process was very difficult, and it is incredible that it was finally dug out completely.
The previous record holder for the largest diamond in North America was the 187.7-carat gem-quality diamond "Diavik Foxfire," which was mined at the same mine by Rio Tinto. Diavik's foxfire was later cut into a pair of yellow earrings and sold for more than US$1.5 million (approximately HK$11.72 million).
However, the yellow diamond dug by Daoming Diamond Mining Company this time is three times larger than Diavik Foxfire. The price of this record-breaking yellow diamond is still unknown as it is still being appraised. The yellow diamond will be cut and polished before being sold.
The largest rough diamond mined in history is the 3106-carat Cullinan Diamond unearthed in South Africa in 1905; the second largest diamond was dug out at the Botswana Mine in 2015. A 1111 carat diamond.
