Orange diamonds are a close relative of yellow diamonds and are only less rare than natural pure red. The color of orange diamonds is caused by exposure to nitrogen during crystallization. However, natural orange diamonds are very rare and almost none have pure color. In the history of jewelry, there have been two natural pure orange colored diamonds that shocked the world.
1. Rated as the world’s largest natural color: The Pumpkin Diamond
The Pumpkin Diamond weighs 5.54 carats and was mined and discovered in the Central African Republic in 1997. It was cut by William Goldberg , and was purchased by Harry Winston the day before Halloween for $1.3 million, currently estimated to be worth about $3 million. GIA calls the pumpkin diamond “one of the largest natural color Fancy Vivid Orange Diamonds in the world” because it is different from other orange diamonds in both hue and chroma.
2. Set a world auction record: Orange diamond 'The Orange'
The orange diamond "The Orange", weighing 14.82 carats, is one of the largest Fancy Vivid Orange diamonds at auction today and was sold for US$31.5 million. Each card is equivalent to more than 2 million U.S. dollars, thus setting two new world auction records - 1. The unit price record per card for all auctioned diamonds and 2. The world auction price record for Fancy Vivid Orange.
The most famous appearance of orange diamonds in recent years must be mentioned at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002, when movie star Halle Berry wore a ring with it as the main diamond. She went on stage to receive the Best Actress Award. This huge diamond also witnessed her becoming the first black woman to win this award in history.
